Motherhood Changes the Body — Support Should Too

Reflecting This Mother’s Day on Strength, Change and Feeling Supported

Motherhood changes you.

We often talk about the emotional shifts, the identity changes, the love. But the physical changes? They’re just as real — and often less understood.

Pregnancy alters posture. Breathing patterns adapt. The centre of gravity shifts. Muscles that once felt steady may suddenly feel unfamiliar. It’s not weakness. It’s change.

And change asks for support.

The Physical Side of Motherhood

As the body grows and adapts during pregnancy, it works differently. The deep core system — including the diaphragm, abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and back muscles — coordinates in new ways to accommodate growth.

At the same time, daily life doesn’t pause. There’s still sitting, standing, lifting, turning, sleeping (or trying to). Later, there’s feeding, carrying, bending, rocking.

Motherhood is physical.

Yet many women move through this period without structured guidance on how to support those changes.

Strength Looks Different Here

Strength in pregnancy isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about understanding what your body needs in this phase.

It’s about:

  • Learning how to breathe in a way that supports your core

  • Building hip and pelvic stability

  • Improving balance as posture shifts

  • Moving in ways that feel steady and intentional

This isn’t about “getting back” to anything.

It’s about feeling supported in the body you’re in now.

Specialist Support, Designed for This Stage

General exercise classes aren’t always designed with the pregnant body in mind.

Pregnancy Pilates is different. It focuses on controlled, low-impact movement that works with the body’s adaptations — not against them. It helps build awareness, coordination and confidence in movement.

At Octagon Clinic, our Pregnancy Pilates sessions with Jo, launching this March, are designed to provide a calm, supportive space — small groups, individual attention, and movement that feels purposeful and reassuring.

It’s not about intensity.
It’s about intelligent support.

A Mother’s Day Reflection

This Mother’s Day, we’re reminded that caring for others often comes naturally.

Caring for yourself can take more intention.

Whether you’re expecting your first child or navigating pregnancy again, support matters. Feeling steady in your body matters. Understanding what’s happening beneath the surface matters.

And you don’t have to figure it out alone.

If you’d like to learn more about our Pregnancy Pilates sessions with Jo, our team would be happy to guide you through what to expect and how to get started this March.

Because motherhood brings change — and change deserves support.
