What are your qualifications?

Hazel, Rachel and Steve are all registered with the General Chiropractic Council (link) and are members of the British Chiropractic Association (link) All have BScs, MScs or post-graduate diplomas in Chiropractic.

How long will a course of treatment last?

This depends on the nature of the problem. After the consultation we will spend time explaining exactly what is causing the problem and how long it is likely to take to correct it. There will be plenty of time to discuss your own concerns. We strongly believe that you are the guardian of your own health and it is never our intention to take this responsibility away from you.

Can a Chiropractor that examines an unsettled baby also treat his grandfather's sore shoulder?

This is a question we are asked a lot. Although we do a large proportion of our work with babies, children and pregnant mothers we are all Chiropractors and as such are happy to treat many types of mechanical disorder. You may find our approach slightly different with our emphasis on stabilisation and re-injury prevention but this is why we are told such a large proportion of our patients come from personal referral.

Is treatment painful?

Bird mobile Octgaon Chiropractic ClinicIn babies and small children, categorically no. Treatment involves gentle unwinding of tension. Some may cry due to a release of tension. Some may not want to be interfered with at that particular moment. Some may decide they are hungry. Most remain relaxed and many fall asleep.

In older children and adults we are sometimes necessarily working on areas of the body which are painful and sore which is what brought you to us in the first place. Our approach is very gentle and as non-interventionary as possible. We often use low-force techniques and work a lot with conditions for which manipulation or vigorous treatment would be inappropriate. The worst part is often the exercises you have to do at home. And we will make sure you do them.

Do you recommend other practitioners?

When we initially see you we spend a lot of time discussing the nature of your problem and many aspects of your general health. We will explain how we can be of help, how you can help yourself and also how other practitioners may be able to help you. We have an excellent Homeopath and Sports Therapist, Laura and Yoshiko respectively, who work with us in the clinic. We know local General Practitioners, Consultants, Acupuncturists, Podiatrists, Breastfeeding Counsellors, Midwives, Antenatal teachers, Yoga and Pilates instructors, Nutritionists and many others whom we can personally recommend.

Are you covered by health insurance?

Many health insurance companies will cover Chiropractic but it can tend to be a bit of a minefield. Some impose a bewildering array of restrictions and special conditions. Check with your insurance company and read the small print carefully! Our clinic policy is that you pay for treatment as you go along and the health insurance company will reimburse you. This is to regulate our cash flow as our experience is that insurers are very prompt paying policy holders but notoriously slow paying suppliers.

Do I need to be referred by my GP?

No, unless you wish to claim on your health insurance and the policy stipulates it. We take a very full health history and examine you very thoroughly at the initial consultation and if we have any concerns we will, with your consent, refer you to your own GP for their opinion or further tests.

Do you take x-rays?

We do not have on-site facilities due to the high proportion of babies and pregnant mothers we treat. We don't have wireless internet, cordless phones or a microwave for the same reason. We have several local clinics which will do x-rays, scans and other diagnostics tests for us if needed. Through our chiropractic training and further post-graduate studies we are proficient at reading x-rays, MRI, CAT and ultrasound scans so bring any with you that you have when you come.

Do I need to bring anything with me when I come?

Any x-rays or scans (see above) recent or otherwise. Red development books for babies. Copies of any letters you may have pertaining to your health.

How will I get to the clinic?

See directions. Road, bus and underground links are all good. There is pay and display parking outside the clinic and in the adjacent roads. Finding a space nearby is usually not a problem except at school drop-off and pick-up when West London generally comes to a halt.Walking, cycling and other active pursuits are actively encouraged and you are welcome to bring bicycles and buggies into reception. For allergy and hygiene reasons we regretably cannot have animals on the premises and would ask you not to eat in the waiting room for the same reason. The atmosphere in the clinic is relaxed and informal and you are, of course, welcome to breast or bottle feed your baby in reception.

Any further questions?

Please feel free to phone us on the clinic number or e-mail us. Our receptionists can help you with most things. If you have specific questions for the chiropractors, we will happily call you back when we have a break and talk to you. We look forward to seeing you.
